What are the card options, and which one is right for you?
There are 2 personal card options for the British Airways American Express credit card. Each come with their own benefits and drawbacks. If you are unsure about having a credit card, view it as a debit card which you pay of every month. What I am suggesting here is simply a way to maximise your normal monthly/annual spending, not to spend more and use the credit. When you setup the card, ensure you also create a direct debit to pay off the monthly fee and use the app to track your spending.
British Airways American Express Credit Card:
This entry-level card typically comes with no annual fee, making it an accessible option for those who want to dip their toes into the world of Avios points without committing to a higher annual cost. However, the rewards are not a great. This is a 1:1 pounds to points card. For every pound you spend, you will gain 1 Avios point. This card entitles you to an economy only companion voucher when you spend £15,000 each membership year on the Card.

The Premium Plus card comes with a higher annual fee of £300, but offers enhanced benefits. With a more generous earning rate and the coveted companion voucher, this card is the one I recommend for those who are able to maximise the spending on their card (read on) as it not only has a higher pounds to points conversion rate of 1:1.5 but also entitles you to a Business Class flight. When you weigh up the £300 fee against the amount saved on flights, it is a no brainer. My partner and I simply put the £300 fee into our holiday budget for the year and see it as part of the annual travel expense.

If you shop using Nectar points, but don’t have the necessity to use them elsewhere, then converting them to valuable Avios points is a great option. Even if you are not a Sainsbury’s shopper, you can collect points at Sainsbury’s, Sainsbury’s Bank, Sainsbury’s Energy, Esso, Expedia and eBay as well as many other retailers. You can also collect points online with hundreds of retailers when you shop through nectar.com. With this system not only could you make a purchase using your Amex card but also top up on Nectar points at the same time! The conversion couldn’t be simpler, just follow these steps:
